Answer & Book Fast

A backed-up sewer is an emergency to the person standing in it. They are not shopping, they are panicking, and they will call three companies in a row until someone picks up. If your phone rings out to voicemail, you just handed that job to the next guy on the list.

Most drain companies do not lose jobs on price. They lose them on the ring. Answering live, or calling back within minutes, is the single cheapest way to book more work without spending another dollar on ads.

Answer live, or call back in under five minutes

Every missed call is a lost job you already paid to generate. If you cannot answer in the truck, pay a live answering service that books appointments, not one that just takes a message. And when a call does go to voicemail, treat a callback like a dispatch: minutes matter, not hours.

Example

Set a hard rule for the crew: any missed call gets a callback before you pull into the next driveway. A five-minute callback still books. A two-hour callback almost never does.

Use a simple booking script

Whoever answers should not improvise. Give them a short script that gets the four things you need and locks in a time. Name, address, what is happening, and when you are coming. Do not turn it into an interrogation about pricing before you have the appointment.

Strong

"Thanks for calling Ace Drain, this is Mike. Sorry to hear the toilet's backing up. What's the address? Got it. I've got a tech who can be there between 2 and 4 today. Can I lock that in for you?"

Weak

"Yeah, we do drains. It depends, could be a couple hundred, could be more, hard to say. Want me to have someone call you back?" Now they are calling the next company.

Give a real arrival window and hold it

"Sometime today" tells the customer to keep calling around. A tight window tells them they are handled. Two-hour windows beat all-day windows, and a heads-up text when you are 30 minutes out separates you from every plumber who has ever left someone waiting.

Example

"You're booked for 2 to 4. I'll text you when I'm about 30 minutes out so you're not stuck waiting by the door all afternoon."

Have a plan for after-hours and emergencies

Sewer backups do not respect business hours, and a 9pm caller with a flooded basement is often your best-paying job of the week. Decide in advance: do you answer 24/7, run a callback line, or use an after-hours service? Then say it plainly in your ad and on your site so the emergency caller knows to dial you.

Strong

"We answer 24/7 for backups and floods. Call the same number day or night, and a real person picks up. Expect a callback within 15 minutes if we're on another job."

Real example from the field

Zoom Drain (Indianapolis) leads with fast, same-day and emergency response and live booking front and center, so the panicked backup caller knows they will reach a real person and get a truck out today.

Do this: Call your own business number right now from a blocked number. If nobody picks up in three rings or the callback plan is fuzzy, fix that today before you spend another dollar on ads.
